You probably know that if you don't have health insurance in 2014, you have to pay a penalty. You might not be aware that there are situations in which you can be exempt from this penalty.

Rather than restate them here in our blog, we encourage you to read them on the government's own
page about exemptions.

If you are exempt, you can either note this on your tax return next year, or fill out a form. (The form is also available on that page.)

The way things are shaping up, many, many people are going to need to do this. As
Forbes and other news organizations reported last week, only one third of the Exchange enrollees were without health insurance before enrolling. So, for now, it appears that the number of uninsured people is not on track to be significantly reduced by the new law.
