You know how your cell phone bill has a section listing out all of the various taxes and fees that you have to pay? Well, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives has introduced a bill called "A Patient's Right to Know."

It would require insurance companies to itemize the known costs of the PPACA on your bill, including:
  • The new annual premium tax on health insurers
  • Fees to fund the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute (PCORI)
  • Reinsurance contributions
  • And proposed fees on insurance exchange users, risk corridor payments and risk-adjustment charges.

It's unlikely that the President would ever sign a law that makes the costs of his bill so clear to consumers. Thankfully, some states are considering their own laws with the same goal.

And some health insurance companies are already listing these new costs separately from the true insurance cost.

We think this is a great idea. Whether you like the health care reform bill or not, you have to be honest about the costs incurred.
