On June 6, the Ohio DOI released an analysis of proposed rates and plans that have been submitted for the Federal Exchange plans.

Ohio’s current average cost to cover medical expenses for an individual health insurance plan is $223. Based on proposals submitted to the Department, the average to cover these costs in 2014 is $420 – an 88% increase.

Today Ohio has over 60 insurance companies and few mandated benefits. Starting in 2014, those choices and options are drastically limited by new coverage mandates in the ACA, which is a major reason costs in Ohio will increase so much.
