Well, here's the latest: HHS’ proposed rule on insurance market reforms states that health insurance issuers generally would be prohibited from denying coverage to people because of a pre-existing condition or other factor.

Individuals will be required to enroll in coverage during specific open enrollment periods, but the proposed rule also provides for special enrollment opportunities in the individual market in certain cases in which other coverage is lost.

In our office we had speculated that this would be the case. And to us, it makes sense.

If people could wait until they got sick to buy coverage, then many people would do exactly that. And health insurance would soon cease to exist.

Creating an open-enrollment period basically requires people to commit to buying a policy before they need it. This will bring some stability to the rates in the individual market.

Of course, just when this enrollment period will be, or how it will work, are not yet known. But watch here for updates.
